Monumental Streetart

St. Petersburg, Russia - 2008; 90x50cm; Mosaic

The starting point was the observation of the numerous benzine stains in the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia, which, in the wet winters, mixed with the rain and/or snowmelt begin to reflect the full spectrum of the light. Combined with the traditional technique of Mosaic, taught as contemporary art in Monumental Art Schools in St. Petersburg, I created a Mosaic of Bisazza stones, which, viewed from the right angle reflect the spectrum of colors on their nacre-coated surface, just like the benzine/water-staines.

The first execution of the Mosaic combines the different colors of the Bisazza-tiles as well as their reflections in a continuos picture. The tiles of the second Mosaic are placed without apparent connection of their colors. The reflection though gives a continous picture

Während meines Studienaufenthalts an der Stiglitz Akademie für Kunst und Design in St. Petersburg studierte ich im Fachbereich für Monumentale Kunst. Dort entwickelte ich ein Mosaik, das auf Beobachtungen der farbigen Schlieren von Benzinpfützen auf nassem Asphalt beruhten, die dort vor allem im Winter ständig zu sehen sind.

Die verwendeten Bisazza-Steine weisen eine Perlmutt-schimmernde Oberfläche auf. Geordnet nach beiden Gesichtspunkten, ursprüngliche Farbe der Steine und Farbigkeit ihres Glanzes, entstanden zwei Mosaike. Jedes einzelne besitzt technische Eigenschaften des Mosaiks, und, je nach Standpunkt, zwei unterschiedliche Erscheinungen: vom richtigen Winkel aus betrachtet fügen sie sich jeweils auch zu einem Mosaik aus ihrer Reflektion zusammen. So entstehen z.B. Farbspuren im Glanz, die in der Farbigkeit der Steine so gar nicht vorhanden sind.

Wie die Vorlagen auch, waren die Mosaike in der Straße zu sehen und sollten, im besten Fall, dort auch eingelassen werden. Dies wurde jedoch nie genehmigt.

Pendant mon séjour en Russie je faisais partie du département de l’art monumental. J’y ai réalisé des mosaïques rappelant les traînées colorées des flaques d’essence sur l’asphalte mouillé, une apparition très habituelle en Russie.

Les pièces utilisées de couleurs différentes présentent une surface brillante nacrée. J’ai harmonisé la couleur des pièces et celle des luisances. Chaque mosaïque possède à la fois les propriétés mussives traditionnelles mais d’apparences différentes, selon la réflexion de la lumière qui nuance les couleurs.

Comme leur modèle, ces mosaïques devaient être encastrées dans la rue. A mon grand regret cela n’a pas été permis par les autorités de la ville.
